Mark Duggan lawfully killed - 8th Jan
The jury in the inquest into the death of Mark Duggan has delivered a verdict of lawful killing.
The jury of three men and seven women delivered its verdict - by a majority of 8 to 2 - to the Coroner at the Royal Courts of Justice after seven days of deliberations.
The 29-year-old was shot dead by firearms officers in Tottenham in August 2011. His death sparked the London riots.
Police believed he planned to pick up a gun from another man, Kevin Hutchinson-Foster, and then move on to Broadwater Farm and had been following him.
At the centre of the inquest was the issue of the handgun that Mark Duggan was believed to have with him.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission had to apologise in the days after his death for leading journalists to believe he had fired at police when the shooting happened.
A gun was found 10 to 20 feet from Mr Duggan's body on the other side of park railings wrapped in a sock.
The police marksman who shot Mark Duggan claimed during the Inquest that he acted in self-defence because he thought Mr Duggan was brandishing a firearm.
The Inquest jury found that Mark Duggan was carrying a gun in the mini cab he was travelling in when he was killed but it was more likely than not that he had thrown it over a fence as soon as the car was stopped, meaning he not have it in his hand.
They said that police had not done enough to gather and react to intelligence about the possibility of Mr Duggan collecting a gun from Hutchinson-Foster.
But they found that the car had been stopped in a location and in a way that "minimised to the greatest extent possible recourse to lethal force".
There were dramatic scenes in court when the conclusion was given, with Mr Duggan's brother swearing at the jurors as they left court. Other supporters shouted "murderers". Some smashed a door and security staff were called to contain the situation.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is still investigating the incident.
In an interim statement in August, it said it had so far found no evidence of criminality by police officers.
